Draft Law on Amendments to the Law on Nuclear Energy was supported and referred to Standing Committees

Given the amendments to the Constitution of Mongolia and significant shifts in the country’s social, economic, and legal landscapes, there is a pressing need to revise the Law on Nuclear Energy.

At the regular session of the Government on October 23, 2024, the Government reviewed and submitted the draft law on amendments to the Law on Nuclear Energy, along with other relevant draft laws, to the Parliament for urgent consideration. This submission aligns with Section 33.1 of the Law on Session Procedure of the State Great Khural of Mongolia.

Subsequently, during the session of the State Great Khural of Mongolia on November 1, 2024, the draft laws were deliberated and referred to the Standing Committees on Security and Foreign Policy, Budget, and Economics for preparation ahead of the first reading.

Since 1972, Mongolia has entered into international agreements and conventions such as the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, the Agreement on the Application of Safeguards Associated with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material, the Convention on Early Notification of a Nuclear Accidents, and the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism, and has been successfully fulfilling its obligations under these international agreements.

The Law on Nuclear Energy, approved by the Parliament in 2009, has 8 chapters and 51 articles, and 8 chapters and 38 articles were amended through a total of 15 amendments.

In connection with this, the proposed bills on amendments to the General Law on Taxation, the Law on Investments, and the Law on Companies are being developed.
