After 800 years, Mongolians are re-embarking on a voyage of discovery. This time they do not go from their inhospitable terrain as conquerors of new lands and carry no swords. The present challenge is one of mopping up investors’ resources to develop the immensely valuable natural resources in their own land. Both the Government and national companies are seeking the most practical method to raise money in foreign markets, and to make Mongolia a proud global brand.
MMJ explains clearly (sometimes bluntly) and in detail what needs to be done to succeed in the venture. Competition in the international capital market is fierce, and is a challenge for a recent entrant to the market economy. Even the Government, with all the resources at its command, sometimes seems a bit lost and behaves amuously.
Are Mongolians totally helpless in entering the global market without the assistance of foreign consultants? Please do not jump to this conclusion. As the interview with D. Achit-Erdene, President of Mongolian International Capital Corporation, shows, the potential is very much there; all that Mongolians need is show is the resolve to adopt some international norms in their business practices. The capital market beckons us, the prize is a better national future, we must not falter on the way, and must not fail to be properly prepared.
This issue of the MMJ suggests to Mongolian companies what they must to do be successfully listed on capital markets. We shall follow up with reports and analyses on the prospects of the issuance of Mongolian Government bonds on the international market, and on the interest shown by international investment banks and funds in extending long-term and loans for major mining projects in Mongolia. Mongolia is poised to join the players, to begin a long-awaited journey to provide a better life to all its people. The future depends on each and every Mongolian making the right choice on whether to be an observer or a participant.
