Oyu Tolgoi LLC produced 46,884 ounces of gold in concentrate

As of the second quarter of 2024, Oyu Tolgoi LLC produced 52,531 tonnes of copper in concentrate and 46,884 ounces of gold in concentrate. The company presented its Q2 2024 performance scorecard on August 21, during which Chief Executive Officer Deirdré Lingenfelder highlighted the outstanding achievements of the reporting period.

As part of its updated strategy, the company is focusing on four main priority areas: "People, Partnership, Planet, and Profit."

Within the "People" priority, the injury frequency rate was 0.12 per 200,000 people/hour during this period, positioning the company as a well-maintained mine with a strong safety record within the Rio Tinto Group. A total of 148,629 people/hour were dedicated to training, resulting in significant skill improvements. Regarding the "Partnership" priority, as of the second quarter of 2024, 26.3 billion MNT was invested in local sustainable development projects, while 306 billion MNT was paid in taxes and other payments. In the "Planet" priority, the goal for water reuse was set at 80% for the reporting period, but this goal was exceeded, reaching an average of 88.5%. Under the "Profit" priority, the company produced 52,531 tonnes of copper in concentrate and 46,884 ounces of gold in concentrate.

Key achievements during the reporting period include:

  • A total of eight events under the "OT on the Go!" initiative were successfully organized. Experts provided orientation and information about the educational programs offered by Oyu Tolgoi to students at universities in Ulaanbaatar, Erdenet, and Darkhan.
  • Oyu Tolgoi carried out technical rehabilitation on 91.6 hectares of land damaged by irresponsible mining in Darkhan-Uul province, specifically at the Khurgad valley of Khongor soum and the Khar Yamaat valley of Sharyn Gol soum.
  • Oyu Tolgoi donated a total of 1 billion MNT for dzud relief to 3,333 herder families that have lost over 70% of their livestock.
  • To enhance the capacity of tree nurseries and support their rehabilitation efforts, the company donated 1.5 billion MNT worth of equipment to the Forest Department, the government implementing agency.
  • For the first time in Mongolia, Oyu Tolgoi, in collaboration with the Mongolian University of Science and Technology and the Rio Tinto Group, trained geotechnical engineers, with the first cohort of graduates receiving their bachelor’s diplomas.
  • Oyu Tolgoi and Unread Media Company successfully completed the “Environmental Good Practices Sharing Programme,"  launched in February of this year.
  • The work on the clean and sewage water lines in the ger district of Khanbogd soum has been completed.
